Kyugetsu Kimono Girl Monchhichi

Traditional Japanese attire stuffed monkey toy

One of the things that often surprise visitors to Japan is the relaxed relationship the Japanese have with their culture. Take kimono, for example: you can see them worn as formal attire by the empress of Japan and at the same time as a casual garment worn by little children – or on their toys. The Kyugetsu Kimono Girl Monchhichi is one such toy that combines pop (the stuffed monkey doll that was a great hit in the 1970s and 1980s) and classical culture (an elegant pink kimono).

The classical in the case of the Kyugetsu Kimono Girl Monchhichi has a real pedigree: this toy has been created in collaboration with a company from Tokyo's old Asakusabashi area, Kyugetsu, that has been making kimono-wearing dolls since the Edo period (1603-1868), back when people only wore kimono! Measuring 14 x 21 x 8 cm (5.5 x 8.3 x 3.1"), this girl Monchhichi is clad in a stunning pink kimono with every detail carefully attended to, including the way it is tucked under the obi sash, the obijime cord over the obi, and the white nagajuban undergarment!
