Kyugetsu Kimono Boy Monchhichi

Traditional Japanese attire stuffed monkey toy

It has been almost 50 years since Monchhichi, the cute stuffed monkey toys from the Tokyo-based Sekiguchi Corporation, first took Japan by storm and then the rest of the world. Their international popularity has since diminished a bit, but they're still a thing in Japan and are available in all kinds of sizes and looks, including some very traditional Japanese ones. The Kyugetsu Kimono Boy Monchhichi is one such example, sporting a look that screams "Japan" the moment you see it!

Created in collaboration with Kyugetsu, a Tokyo doll maker with a history one and a half centuries longer than Monchhichi (it was founded in 1836), the Kyugetsu Kimono Boy Monchhichi wears a beautiful kimono, complete with a white nagajuban undergarment, an obi sash, tabi split-toe socks, and zori sandals. Other than the classic Monchhichi hairdo, this little (14 x 21 x 8 cm, or 5.5 x 8.3 x 3.1") guy could blend in easily on the streets of early 20th-century Tokyo!
