Kyugetsu Kabuki Sukeroku Hagoita

Traditional Japanese theater character on paddle-shaped ornament

In Kabuki, one of Japan's two main traditional forms of theater, Sukuroku is the protagonist of the eponymous play and among the most beloved characters. Almost any Japanese person will recognize his purple headband, black and red kimono, and sakuhachi flute protruding from his sash, all elements that are included in the Kyugetsu Kabuki Sukeroku Hagoita. What you gett with this item isn't just a spectacular decorative ornament for your home but also a piece of kabuki history!

It's no coincidence that a kabuki character is featured on the Kyugetsu Kabuki Sukeroku Hagoita: although they started off as battledores for a game called hanetsuki that closely resembles badminton, the oblong paddles called hagoita became good luck talismans and then, in the Edo period (1603-1868), something like an advertising billboard for kabuki actors. In the beginning, the images were painted but with time they became three-dimensional to look like dolls dressed with beautiful kimono fabrics. The Kyugetsu Kabuki Sukeroku Hagoita also comes with a stand, giving you more decorating options!
