Ice Cream Soda Umbrella

Coffeehouse beverage-themed rain protection

There are at least two umbrellas that come to mind when one thinks of Japan: one is the classic red paper type used by the geisha and the other is the transparent vinyl umbrella that you'll see hordes of ordinary folk holding on a rainy day in the crowded streets of Tokyo. The truth is, though, that the Japanese are very imaginative when it comes to their umbrellas. How could they not be in a country where it rains about a third of the time? The Ice Cream Soda Umbrella is one such case where the designers really let their imaginations soar!

The inspiration behind the magnificent palette of colors that make up the five models of the Ice Cream Soda Umbrella (blue, green, pink, orange, and purple) is ice cream soda, one of the staples of the old coffee shops called kissaten that were all the rage back in the 1960s and 1970s. As a matter of fact, these 87 x 103 cm (34.3 x 40.6") umbrellas have been created in collaboration with a modern kissaten, the Tabi Suru Kissa, and correspond to its various flavors of ice cream float. They even have a cherry-shaped charm on their tie wrap like the cherries served on the top of the kissaten's ice cream sodas!
