One thing that makes Japan so amazing is the way the people manage to balance the traditional aspects of their culture with the modern: combinations that in most other cultures would be considered awkward or profane in Japan are not only attempted but very often fully accepted and become part of the country's cultural landscape. Especially when it comes to pop culture icons, like Sanrio's Hello Kitty (or Kitty-chan, as she is known in Japan), pretty much any combination is considered fair play, even if it involves a centuries-old craft, like in the case of the Hello Kitty Sueishi Kiln Bizen Pottery Plate.
The Hello Kitty Sueishi Kiln Bizen Pottery Plate is a collaboration between Sanrio and Sueishi, a kiln in Bizen City, Okayama Prefecture, that makes pottery in the local style. That doesn't sound much but things are different when you consider that this style has been around for over 1,000 years! The craftspeople of Sueishi have put all their art into these plates to make Kitty-chan really stand out in both the square (205 x 205 x 25 mm / 8 x 8 x 1") and round (210 x 210 x 25 mm / 8.3 x 8.3 x 1") versions. The plates are as good for using as they are for decoration!
