Bamboo Nagashi Somen Slider

Traditional serving device for cold noodles

Nagashi somen, the thin, cool noodles that swim down a chute of water, are a common sight at summer festivals all over Japan. They are a little harder to see in the more urban areas of Tokyo these days but if you wander even a little off the beaten path, you find Japanese of all ages, often dressed in yukata summer kimono, trying to fish the noodles out of the water with chopsticks. The Bamboo Nagashi Somen Slider lets you recreate this atmosphere in your own home or garden. Even better, you can make it as big as you want!

The Bamboo Nagashi Somen Slider comes with several pieces that you can combine in different ways. Its maker recommends the setup with two sliders, measuring a whopping 2,150 x 675 x 250 mm (7 ft x 2.2 ft x 9.8")! Four AA alkaline batteries make the water that you put in its tank shoot up the tubes into the bamboo-like slides and from there down to the pool, and then up again in a nonstop circuit so you can catch the somen as they slide down. Fill it with water, add some ice and start fishing!
