Yokozuna Name Fabric

Sumo champions pattern cloth

One of the (many, many) rules sumo wrestlers have to obey is always wearing traditional clothes. For their everyday life, this means a cotton yukata kimono with an obi sash and either wooden geta clogs or leather zori sandals. The yukata can be any color and have any motif, but for obvious reasons, many wrestlers choose something from the sumo world and often something with their shikona (their sumo name) on it. And since these are all custom-made, you need the right fabric to make them: a piece of fabric like the Yokozuna Name Fabric!

Using navy blue as its base color (always a good choice, especially for men's yukata), the Yokozuna Name Fabric is decorated with name tags with the shikona of famous past yokozuna grand champions, intertwined with tsuna ropes like the yokozuna wear when they enter the dohyo ring before the bouts. These are names that have become sumo legends: Chiyonofuji, Taiho, and the most recent Hakuho, the most successful yokozuna of all time. The fabric comes in a bolt measuring 40 centimeters by 12 meters (1.3 feet by 13.1 yards), enough to make a full yukata and matching kinchaku drawstring pouch as an accessory!
