When choosing the Tokyo 2020 Olympics Look of the Games visual identity, the Japanese Olympic Committee decided to use different shades of several very Japanese colors like dark blue, purple, and dark green, layered to evoke the kasane no irome scheme used in traditional ceremonial kimono. Being part of the Look of the Games section of the official Tokyo 2020 merchandise lineup, the Tokyo 2020 Olympics Look of the Games Lanyard is also harnessing this design in blue, complemented by a white section that accentuates the Olympic symbols (two big "Tokyo 2020" insignia, accompanied by the Tokyo 2020 logo and Olympic rings in full color).
