Studio Gala Wooden Kagami Mochi Small

Traditional Japanese Oshogatsu decoration

There are few items that say "New Year" like kagami mochi, a pair of round mochi rice cakes stacked one upon the other (think a flattened snowman), topped by a daidai (a bitter citrus fruit like a small tangerine), and set on an elevated tray called a sanpo. The Studio Gala Wooden Kagami Mochi Small is one such set with the difference that all the items are handmade: the mochi are made of wood and the daidai is a ball made of colored cord.

The above descriptions doesn't do the Studio Gala Wooden Kagami Mochi Small justice, though. Besides the amazing woodworking that has been gone into the sanpo and the two mochi (which can also be nested like Russian dolls when the holidays are over for storing until the next New Year season), the braiding of the cord that makes up the daidai involves a complicated technique called karauchi, which uses 16 different threads, and even the decorative red and white cord on the front has been tied in a special knot called kamemusubi (turtle knot) that conveys a hope for a long life. A fine example of Japanese craftsmanship that will bring a touch of elegance to your New Year decorations!
