Takaoka Copperware Inverted Fuji Suiban Bowl

Traditional Toyama copper crafts vase

The "suiban" part of the Takaoka Copperware Inverted Fuji Suiban Bowl is a word that even some Japanese might have a difficulty recognizing: it comes from the world of ikebana, the classic art of flower arrangement, and refers to shallow bowls that are used to showcase the artistic creations with the help of a kenzan, or pin frog, to attach the flower stem. What makes this particular suiban unique, though, is the Mount Fuji-shaped protrusion on the upper side, which gets reflected in the water in the bowl.

The other thing that isn't immediately visible is that behind the Inverted Fuji Suiban Bowl are metallurgy techniques that have been developed in Toyama Prefecture's city of Takaoka for over 400 years. Gingado, the workshop that has created it, is famous for making exquisite Buddhist statues for temples all over Japan, and has poured that same level of craftsmanship into this small vase. Whether you are a fledgling ikebana artist or not, you can give your space a Japanese aura with this superb work of art!
