Kabazaiku Coffee Mill

Cherry tree bark beans grinder made in traditional crafts style

Kabazaiku is one of Japan's many crafts but is largely unknown even to the Japanese themselves, unless they are involved with the tea ceremony. That's because it is mostly used for tea containers and other utensils. What it is? Basically a kind of woodworking that uses the inner bark of Japan's most beloved tree, the sakura or cherry tree. The Kabazaiku Coffee Mill harnesses this classic technique not for tea, but for its Western counterpart, coffee!

Despite its smallish size (110 x 110 x 185 mm, 4.3 x 4.3 x 7.3"), the Kabazaiku Coffee Mill is a genuine working coffee mill for grinding your coffee beans. But as its maker says, it isn't made for people who want a mill with adjustable blades or other fancy features. Instead, what you get here is a superb piece of craftsmanship with a beautiful wood finish; an ornamental, sophisticated kitchen utensil with a natural luster and which hails from a traditional Akita Prefecture art going back over 200 years!
