Goldfish Drinking Glass

Drinkware in traditional Japanese design

The Japanese love fish in all sizes, shapes, and colors and even if they cannot eat them, they sure like watching them, hence the koi carp ponds that now exist all over the world. But sometimes in always-pressed-for-space Japan, getting a pond for even one koi can be a problem and this is why goldfish can be very handy: throw them in a small tank, preferably of two or three different kinds, and you have a miniature pond you can enjoy anytime you want. Or, in the case of the Goldfish Drinking Glass, every time you have a drink!

Each Goldfish Drinking Glass is created individually by hand. Glass artist Tomomi Matsuo, specializes in painting fish, making them extremely lifelike and the ones in this 8.5 x 11 cm (3.3 x 4.3") glass look as if they're really swimming inside! There are two of them, a black one of the species called demikin or telescope goldfish, and a red one of the species called wakin, or Japanese goldfish. And they will always be there, since they were painted before the glass was put in the furnace. Enjoy your drink and a small piece of Japanese nature with this exquisite piece of glass art!
