Traditional Japanese Uchiwa Fan Make a Wish

There are many types of fans in Japan, from the cheapest factory-made ones that you can find in 100-yen shops to the most expensive silk items sold in the finest kimono accessory atelier. There are also special fans used by sumo referees and iron ones the samurai used to carry as weapons (when closed, they became clubs). One lesser-known design is the bussen, which actually means Buddhist fan and is used by priests when they want to put out candles (because blowing them out is considered taboo). The Traditional Japanese Uchiwa Fan Make a Wish is shaped like one such fan.

The shape, though, isn't the only link between Buddhism and the Traditional Japanese Uchiwa Fan Make a Wish: its style too, with a black motif a hare running among the stars on a minimalist orange background, is inspired by Zen Buddhism and the aesthetic of shibui (simple and unassuming) that is one of Japan's greatest contributions to the world of art. Handmade using traditional materials (bamboo, handmade washi paper, and persimmon juice), this 150 x 310 mm (5.9 x 12.2") fan can be a wonderful decorative ornament. For this reason, there are also two optional display stands (horizontal and vertical).
