Tama Noren Bead Doorway Curtain

Traditional Japanese space divider

For most fans of Japanese culture, noren brings to mind the fabric curtains hanging over the door of restaurants and other traditional businesses, printed with the name of the shop and letting potential customers know the shop is open for business. A noren can actually be made of anything, even wooden beads. And in the case of the Tama Noren Bead Doorway Curtain, handmade wooden beads.

The Tama Noren Bead Doorway Curtain comes from a city in Hyogo Prefecture called Ono, which has been making abacuses since the 16th century. Up until the arrival of the pocket calculator, the abacus was what the Japanese would use for calculations and the people in Ono developed a terrific skill for creating wooden beads. The 85 x 150 cm (2.8 x 4.9 ft) bead curtain, available in two colors (beige and brown), is the result of this craft. Both practical and attractive, if you are looking for a traditional yet unusual Japanese item that elegantly decorates doorways, this fits almost any home perfectly!
