Pikachu Edo Kimekomi Ningyo Doll

You have to look at a kimekomi ningyo from up close to realize the level of work that has gone into them. And even then, you might not understand the whole construction method that involves first making the doll from a piece of wood (or cork these days), carving an elaborate network of grooves on it, and then stuffing fabric in these grooves to create the doll's face, body, and clothes. When you do, you'll appreciate even more the Pikachu Edo Kimekomi Ningyo Doll, which combines traditional craftsmanship and pop culture!
Created by the craftspeople of Tokyo's Mataro Ningyo, a workshop that has been making these dolls for over a century (it was founded in 1919), the Pikachu Edo Kimekomi Ningyo Doll is a faithful reproduction of the most famous Pokemon of all but with some traditional touches thrown in: for example, the skin is decorated with cherry blossom patterns, there's a festive white and red string around the neck, and a golden folding panel behind it. It measures 150 x 120 x 157 mm (5.9 x 4.7 x 6.2") and also comes with a lacquered wooden base, making it great for displaying!
