Osyairo Miwa Somen Noodles (Six Colors and Flavors)

Colored Japanese pasta

If you think about it, pasta is the most popular food in Japan. If we want to get technical about it, they are noodles, not pasta, but these ultimately don't look so different! They can do, though: especially in the summer, most Japanese will forgo the usual choices of ramen, soba, and udon noodles in favor of somen, the very thin (less than 1.3 mm or 0.05") wheat noodles usually eaten cold. And if they want something even more different, they'll opt for the Osyairo Miwa Somen Noodles (Six Colors and Flavors)!

The Osyairo Miwa Somen Noodles (Six Colors and Flavors) come with a pedigee that goes back three centuries: that's how many years their maker has been producing somen noodles in Nara, one of Japan's old capitals. But it isn't just the history that makes these somen so special: they come in six different flavors, each a different color! So when you open the beautiful wooden box they come in, you see six 50 g (1.8 oz) bundles of super-thin noodles colored green (for shiso), purple (for yam), blue (for gardenia), yellow (for kabosu citrus), orange (for yuzu citrus), and red (for plum). Unique Japanese flavors for unique presentations!
