Nagoya Yuzen Karakusa Folding Fan

Handheld fan made in traditional Nagoya style

Wearing an actual kimono is the ultimate statement of your affection for Japanese culture but let's face it: even if you do own a kimono and know how to wear it, this isn't something you can easily do outside Japan. There is, though, at least one accessory that you can always have with you and that immediately lends your appearance a special Japan touch while, at the same time, being very practical, especially in the summer: the sensu folding fan. How how about a truly high-quality folding fan that wouldn't look out of place even in the hands of a Kyoto geisha? In other words, the Nagoya Yuzen Karakusa Folding Fan!

The Nagoya yuzen part in the name refers to a special dyeing technique used in kimono and their accessories in the eponymous city. Made of silk, the Nagoya Yuzen Karakusa Folding Fan features this technique in an exquisitely detailed arabesque motif. This design, other than its beauty, also carries a meaning of prosperity and longevity, so owning an item with it is thought to bring good fortune. The fan is 18 cm (7") long and accompanied by a fabric case, also in the karakusa pattern, making a near-perfect example of Japanese craftsmanship!
