Kiso Foundation Ashtray

House foundation design mortar ashtray

Even in the suburbs of Tokyo, detached houses are still being built the same way: a wooden frame on a concrete foundation laying out the house's floor plan. This foundation is called a "kiso" and this is where designer Nobuhiro Sato got the inspiration for the Kiso Foundation Ashtray. A miniature version of those detached house foundations, you get more than an ashtray: it's like owning a small piece of contemporary art that also bring an icon of daily life in Japan into your office or living room.

But what if you don't smoke? You could still fill the "rooms" making up this mini-floor plan with the gravel provided and create your own modern Zen garden, or use the Kiso Foundation Ashtray as an organizer for paperclips, pins, rubber bands, and all those tiny items that clutter up our desks. This is a unique piece (in the literal sense: it's handmade) that will bring a small taste of Japan to your space.
