Soy candles? Sure! In Japan, soy is used for pretty much everything so soy wax, a material made mainly from soybean oil, is a very good candidate thanks to its creamy, matte texture, the fact that it doesn't produce soot, and its soft light. These are all excellent properties, especially if you're making decorative candles and Kameyama, an Osaka company that has been doing exactly that for almost 100 years, recommends soy wax and offers it in the Kameyama Soy Candle Kit, a DIY craft set that allows you to make two decorative candles yourself!
In the Kameyama Soy Candle Kit you find 180 g (7 oz) of soft soy wax, one wooden wick that you can split in two and use half for each of your candles, two Petri-type glass dishes to serve as the base for your candles, two metal clips to hold the wick, and pigment sticks in four colors (yellow, red, blue and pink) that you can melt in the wax to give it practically any color you like. Add a few dried flowers, cinnamon sticks, leaves, and twigs, and you'll have a pair of great decorative ornaments that can't be bought in any store!
