Traditional Japanese Uchiwa Fan Two Sides of the Same Coin

Classic crafts in animal design

There are two sides in Japan: one is the loud, multicolored, maximalist side that came with the early modern period and the other is the quiet, somber, minimalist side that is older, influenced by Zen Buddhism and the Kyoto imperial court. Made in the style very much of the latter, the Traditional Japanese Uchiwa Fan Two Sides of the Same Coin is also a reminder of these two sides, which makes it great as both an actual fan you can use to cool yourself in the summer, and as a superb example of Japanese artistry!

Made by hand using only traditional materials (bamboo, handmade washi paper, and persimmon juice, one of the old-school dyes still used in top-quality crafts), the Traditional Japanese Uchiwa Fan Two Sides of the Same Coin depicts three animals – a bird, horse, and hare – transforming into one another as a paper strip that brings to mind a never-ending Möbius loop. And for the times you will want to store your fan or display it as an ornament, it has two optional stands: vertical and horizontal.
