Kyugetsu Monchhichi Asakusa Kaminarimon Gate

Tokyo tourist spot stuffed monkey toy

Even those who visit Tokyo for just one day, pass through Asakusa, a small neighborhood in the eastern part of the metropolis on the Sumida River, to see Tokyo's oldest temple, Sensoji, and get a taste of the atmosphere of the prewar era. And the first thing visitors do is take a picture in front of Sensoji's first gate (it has two), called Kaminarimon (Thunderbolt Gate) after its giant red paper lantern – the same lantern that the Kyugetsu Monchhichi Asakusa Kaminarimon Gate is holding between its hands and feet!

Yes, the stuffed monkey toys called Monchhichi and made by a Tokyo company (that isn't that far from Asakusa), are still around in Japan and the Kyugetsu Monchhichi Asakusa Kaminarimon is one of them. Made in collaboration with historical Tokyo doll maker Kyugetsu (which is also not so far from Asakusa!) and wearing a headband like those worn by people who participate in Sanja Matsuri, Asakusa's huge festival held every May, this 16 cm (6.3") true Tokyo original, so if you're a fan of the world's biggest metropolis, you need one!
