Katsuo Kaitai-kun Bonito Dissection Toy

Fish-themed educational toy

It is the bluefin and the yellowfin tuna that get the most attention when it comes to sushi and sashimi but if you ask any Japanese what's their favorite fish, especially in spring and autumn, you's hear katsuo (bonito or skipjack tuna) much more often than maguro (tuna). Not just for the meat either: in the form of the katsuobushi flakes, which are used in numerous dishes, the bonito is probably the most commonly eaten fish in Japan. To celebrate this ubiquitous fish, Ninben, a company that has been making katsuobushi since 1699 (!), has created a unique educational toy: the Katsuo Kaitai-kun Bonito Dissection Toy!

At 42 x 17 x 10.5 cm (16.5 x 6.7 x 4.1"), the Katsuo Kaitai-kun Bonito Dissection Toy could very well be a life-size lookalike of the real fish. Actually, they are usually about 10 cm (4") bigger but this is close enough. It's made of six pieces held together with hook and loop fasteners, making it easy to take them apart and see exactly what the fish is like inside and which are the parts used for eating – or for katsuobushi. Originally designed for educating children, it also won't look out of place in your kitchen as an ornament!
