Hokusai T-Shirt Umezawa Manor in Sagami Province
Casual shirt with contemporary interpretation of classic art
It's a shame that although the Edo-period (1600–1868) master painter Katsushika Hokusai found 36 different angles and settings to present Mount Fuji, most people only know three: The Great Wave off Kanagawa; Fine Wind, Clear Morning (aka Red Fuji); and Thunderstorm Beneath the Summit (aka Fuji in Lightning). The Hokusai T-Shirt Umezawa Manor in Sagami Province tries to address this by featuring a lesser-known but equally amazing composition that presents Japan's iconic mountain surrounded by standing and flying red-crowned cranes, another of the nation's symbols!
This beautiful T-shirt, available in four sizes, has been designed by a group of craftspeople and designers calling themselves the Hokusai Project: based in Hokusai's hometown, Tokyo's Sumida ward, they use the artist's work as inspiration for modern items that capture the atmosphere of his time. The Hokusai T-Shirt Umezawa Manor in Sagami Province achieves that with a beautiful rendering of the eponymous woodblock print on the back and the Mount Fuji part on the front, laid out over a canvas of heavy 100% cotton using the traditional sumizome method of dyeing.
