Known as the one-eyed dragon because he lost his right eye to smallpox when a child, Date Masamune was the ruler of the Tohoku region of northeast Japan during the Waring States period, and is one of the most recognizable figures in the whole of samurai history. An excellent strategist, he served under warlords Toyotomi Hideyoshi and Tokugawa Ieyasu in their quest to unify Japan but at the same time supported the arts and culture.
