First came imagawayaki, a sweet snack that wraps anko bean paste in a flour skin, and has been made and sold in Edo (old Tokyo) since the 18th century. Then, in the early 20th century, it was reimagined by a different shop with the skin more cake-like and in the shape of a tai (sea bream): taiyaki (baked sea bream. And then, in the early 21st century, this was reimagined yet again as a toy that puts a very realistic version in the palm of your hand: the 3D Taiyaki Dissection Puzzle!
The 3D Taiyaki Dissection Puzzle is not particularly hard to build or dissect, but that doesn't mean it isn't lots of fun! It's made of 11 parts: the two outer cake shells, eight bits that make up its anko filling, and a pink heart-shaped mochi that is often put in the center of taiyaki. When assembled, it measures 120 x 35 x 83 mm (4.7 x 1.4 x 3.3"), about as big as a real taiyaki, and it even comes with a paper bag, just like the taiyaki you get in Tokyo's neighborhoods!
