12 Zodiac Animals in One Good Luck Talisman

Japanese New Year decoration

Every year in December, shops all over Japan are flooded with talismans based on the eto zodiac animal of the coming year. New Year's Day is Japan's biggest holiday (depending on where you are in the country, it often extends to January 2 or even January 3) and people still like to celebrate it using traditional decorations, including the eto. The problem is that every year, you need a new one and as the years pile up, so does your collection of animals. The 12 Zodiac Animals in One Good Luck Talisman means you never have to worry about buying a new eto again!

The idea isn't new: it goes back to Utagawa Yoshitora, a woodblock print master who in 1858 made a humorous painting that depicted a weird animal made up of parts of the 12 eto: mouse, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, rooster, dog, and wild boar. The 12 Zodiac Animals in One Good Luck Talisman is a 3D version of that image, created with the Ota Memorial Museum, whose collection includes the original Utagawa. Approximately 9 x 5 x 10.5 cm (3.5 x 2 x 4.1") and with a 15 x 20 cm (6 x 7.9") gold folding screen, this is the last eto you will ever need!
