Gakken's amateur science sets are great for teaching kids or adults about engineering, technology and culture. This latest kit is a computer DIY set, allowing you to build the Japanino, an 8-bit computer that spells out certain words and can be programmed to control LED lights and sounds.

Gakken 8bit Micro Computer Japanino Model

The Japanino Arduino-compatible micro computer board has eight analog input pints and fourteen digital input/output pins, and you can insert it directly into a USB port. You can also customize the P.O.V. optical afterimage robotic arm (with in-built speaker) to make pictures and symbols, and access it all via the IDE open source programming software on a Mac or Windows computer.
